The necessity of protein shakes in sports
We are going to have a quick look at whether protein shakes are a necessary nutritional supplement to an athlete (regular or professional). There definitely are two views to look at this topic from, professional and regular athletes. When one says regular compared to professional athletes, they would mean recreational compared to competitive athleticism. While obvious that protein in any facet is an important part of any athletes diet, the idea of supplementing that need with protein shakes as an added source is a not so obvious case of necessity in either method of training.
While a great source of extra protein in a diet, many sources differ on the actual effectiveness of protein supplements. There's a general consensus that an extra source of protein can't hurt. But people fork out copious amounts of money on protein shakes to enhance their muscle mass gain and you always have to wonder if it is really worth it?
With the modern advancements in sports science and nutrition, pro athletes can have e specially formulated balances of all the essentials of a balanced diet, so some form of protein supplement is a given. However, there are quite a large sum of under funded sports stars that don't have these nutrition gurus to count their every calorie and nutrient that goes into those well oiled machines we call athletes.
These less fortunate athletes have to rely on good old fashion nutrition from food they buy and prepare and they need to know whether any little boost they can get is worth it. You also have to consider the everyday gym nut that wants that little bit more muscle, is it worth handing over money for that slight edge? Well reports says yes, but ultimately it is up to the individual whether they think the expense is worth it.
